Uno de los primitivos condados de Cataluña. Dice Salazar y Castro que los condes de A. "no reconocían" a ningún príncipe. Usaban el título de condes por la gracia de Dios, batían moneda, creaban notarios, armaban caballeros, imponían gabelas y tributos a sus súbditos y les concedían gracias y fueros, teniendo todas aquellas prerrogativas que los príncipes absolutos y libres de España. Por eso, el cardenal Hugo Cándido, legado apostólico, en la data de una decisión hecha en el Concilio de Girona el año 1068, dice que se celebró "regnantibus in Cathalonia principibus Raymundo Berengario Barcinonae et Poncio Empuriarum comitubus". Tuvieron también los conde de A. feudatarios de gran autoridad, entre ellos los condes de Rosellón, los vizcondes de Cabrera, Rocabertí, Castellnou y otros barones de los más principales de Cataluña. Entroncaron en la casa de Lara porque doña Teresa Fernández de Lara hallábase casada en 1242 con Poncio Hugo,
