Antica famiglia originaria Amalfitana, detta pure Ancoraria ed Anchola. Nel IV volume dell'opera del Cav. Ricca la Nobiltà delle Due Sicilie, nel discorso genealogico della famiglia d'A. sono riportate due iscrizione che il Primicerio della Chiesa di Amalfi Girolamo Pansa attesta nel 23 maggio 1798 ritrovarsi nel Duomo di Amalfi prima che Monsignor di Bologna lo avesse riattato, e che con altre molte iscrizioni furono tolte via andando disperse. Il Brandi nelle vite de' Pontefici asserisce che Stefano VII romano, fosse della famiglia d'A. perchè usava per arme un'ancora. E tale opinione è seguita dal Confuorto nel quarto volume di giunta ai tre del de Lellis sulle famiglie nobili. Dalle iscrizioni sudette si rileva che Leone Conte della Repubblica Amalfitana nell'anno 846 era cognominato Ancorario, e che Pietro, discendente di Lenzio, era ascritto al Seggio di Nido.
