Famiglia lombarda assai antica e nobile. I suoi membri si fanno risalire ad un Fossato, feudatario di Corenno nei pressi di Dervio sul Lago di Como, nel 1271. Si annoverano un Andrea, cui si deve, fra il 1384 e il 1389, la redazione degli statuti di Dervio e Corenno; un Cristoforo, vicario della Valassina nella prima metà del secolo XV; un Camillo, creato da Urbano VIII Vescovo di Almira morì nel 1641. Un Giovanni Antonio (n. 1665), "fisico collegiato" dei XII di Provvisione; un Girolamo (1700-1775), "fisico generale" dello Stato di Milano; un Giambattista nel 1765 era Vescovo di Lodi; un Pietro Paolo (1706-1772) fu avvocato fiscale, Capitano di giustizia e senatore a Milano. In seguito podestà di Cremona, nel 1748 fu insignito del titolo di conte. Nel 1752 si unì in matrimonio a Cecilia Sormani, discendente dall'illustre casata milanese, da cui ebbe, fra gli altri, Gian Mario
