Famiglia assai antica ed illustre, ebbe origine da Andrea detto Andriolis della terra di Tricesimo, e si trapiantò nel 1150 in Udine, alla cui nobiltà fu aggregata nel 1210. Anticamente chiamavasi Idrioli ed anche de Castro Ulini, perchè abitava nel recinto del castello, e poi fu chiamata da Brazzaco e Castel del Volgo, feudi da essa posseduti insieme a molti altri nel patriarcato aquilejese. Numerosi personaggi di tale cognome si trovano di sovente menzionati nei documenti notarili in Veneto ed in Friuli, fin dai secoli trascorsi, dai quali appare che erano di condizione nobile. Annovera questa casata personaggi di elevate virtù tra i quali notiamo Michelangelo che nel XVIII secolo fu un medico molto stimato e scrittore di importanti trattati di medicina.
