Nei ricordi dei tempi andati si leggono alcune varianti di questo cognome, dovute alle solite cause della pronunzia dialettale e dal modo di interpretare nella scritturazione i cognomi. Fu ricevuta nell'ordine di Malta nel 1565, ed in seguito ascritta al Registro delle Piazze Chiuse e dichiarata ammissibile nelle Real Regie Guardie del Corpo. Appartennero a questa famiglia; Rinaldo, consigliere e reggente della Vicaria; Ettore, generale dei Teatini nel 1639; Francesco, generale di brigata e maggiordomo di settimana del re Ferdinando II; Francesco Saverio, colonnello del genio nell'esercito del regno delle Due Sicilie, uno dei più valorosi difensori di Gaeta ed autore di una storia di quell'assedio; per la sua bravura e lealtà meritò gli elogi del generale Cialdini.
