Famiglia pugliese assai antica ed illustre, i nomi dei suoi componenti sono ricordati in contratti di acquisto di terre e case fin dal XVIII secolo. Delle sue origini non si hanno tizie certe, ma è comune opinione che sia un ramo degli Angelè , infatti, anche detti Anghelè, nobili Spagnoli della regione di Guipúzcoa, arrivati nel Regno di Napoli con un Pedro, valente uomo d'armi al servizio di Pietro Navarro, agli inizi del XVI secolo, i cui discendenti si insediarono in Lecce. I riferimenti più antichi risalgono all'inizio del XIII secolo, quando questa famiglia era stata nella delegazione, inviata da Re Sancho VII di Navarra al Giovanni d'Inghilterra. Altri riferimenti di questa famiglia appaiono dal XV al XIX secolo, in particolare nel consolidamento della conquista americana, presenziarono la nomina a governatore della Nueva Vizcaya di Don Francisco de Ibarra, il 24 Luglio 1562.
