La famiglia è tra le più antiche delle Marche e nel secolo XI si hanno sue notizie a Montalto nella Marca Picena. Donna Francesca di Bartolomeo impose ai figli avuti dal marito Giovannini Tommaso, l'obbligo di assumere col proprio cognome, quello materno con lo stemma. Gli A. ottennero il patriziato romano nel 1746. In seguito conseguirono la nobiltà di Montalto ed il patriziato orvietano. Filippo Leonardo fu creato conte nel 1721 e fu conservatore di Roma. Da questa illustre famiglia uscirono due avvocati concistoriali: Tommaso celebre giuresperito e suo figlio Paolo Francesco che nel 1780 fu creato cardinale vescovo di Orvieto. fu mecenate ed a lui si devono personali cospicue oblazioni per i restanti a quella cattedra. Suo fratello Nicola fu colonnello di cavalleria nelle milizie pontificie; Francesco fu lancia spezzata di Clemente XIII. Nel 1843 Filippo Maria fu compreso fra i 60 patrizi coscritti in sostituzione della famiglia dall'Aste
