Assai antica famiglia nobile della Sicilia si cui si hanno notizie sin dal XIII secolo in S. Filippo di Agirò; si vuole proveniente di Moscovia dove fiorirono Abbia de Apruz capitano del Granduca di Moscovia, e che si distinse contro i Tartari. Demetrio fu cancelliere di quel ducato come riferisce il Mugnos. Un Giaimo ebbe da re Federico lo Svevo concesso il feudo di Cabica che poi ebbe confermato da re Manfredi; un Michele lo troviamo tra i falconieri dello stesso imperatore Federico nel 1240. Lo stemma della famiglia Apruzzo della Sicilia è: Campo d'argento con tre monti rossi sormontati in capo da corona di rosso.
