Este apellido, como su nombre lo indica, procede de Aragón. Mosén Jaime Febrer dice que desde Jaca pasó a la conquista de Valencia, sirviendo al rey don Jaime I de Aragón, el caballero Juan A., quien al frente de su tropa rindió las plazas de Alcoy (Alicante) y de Agullent (Valencia). Pasó después a la hoy ciudad de Villajoyosa (Alicante), en la que hizo mucho daño a los moros, derrotándolos también en las villas de Calpe y de Altea, de la provincia de Alicante. Finalmente se estableció en esta capital, en la que fundó casa y dejó sucesores. Martín de Viciana cita a Mosén Gaspar A. de Puigmoltó y a su sobrino Gaspar, y dice que eran caballeros por el brazo militar en la ciudad de Alicante, donde tenían sus moradas. Añade que su hidalguía fue confirmada por sentencia del baile general de Valencia, en 8 de octubre de 1551.
