Acerca del origen y procedencia de este apellido hay diversas opiniones. El licenciado Frías de Albornoz y otros tratadistas dicen que el linaje A. procede del solar de Arandia, en Navarra, y que por la pronunciación castellana se le llamó A., pero la opinión más generalizada, y seguramente cierta, es que el apellido A. procede de la villa de A. de Duero, ya que cronistas de la época relatan que estando la villa en poder de los moros, el caballero Romero de León, de la casa de Valduerna, viendo que la villa se defendía en su puente, la atacó con los suyos, logrando arrebatársela a los sarracenos y apoderarse a continuación de la villa, cuyo nombre tomaron por apellido sus sucesores.
