Uma das mais antigas linhagens da Galiza que os genealogistas fazem provir de Rodrigo Anes de Araujo, assim chamado por ser Senhor do Castelo de Araujo, na Galiza. Os nobiliários galegos fazem recuar a antiguidade desta família dizendo que procedia das antigas linhagens dos Aza, ou Maia. Rodrigo Annes casou com D.maior Alvares de Aza, sua parenta, filha de D.Rodrigo Alvares de Aza e de sua mulher D.Maria Pires de Ambia, de quem ficou vasta descendência, da qual o ramo primogénito, o dos Araujo e Vasconcelos, manteve o Senhorio de Gondive, Lobios, e honra de Hornos, e de outros muitos lugares da Galiza, e em Portugal os do Castelo de Lindoso, e outros, tendo em 1885 sido feitos Viscondes de Sinde, Solar na Póvoa do Lanhoso onde ainda hoje se Vêem os escudos que os Araujos usaram quer em Portugal, quer na Galiza.Muitas outras casa titulares usaram este apelido como
