La famiglia Arbuffo si portò in Genova da Sestri Levante nel secolo XIII e non tardò a conseguire nella fiorente Repubblica rinomanza e onori. Il cognome venne usato nelle forme di Arbuffo e Rebuffo. Alla Riforma del 1528 venne aggregata all'Albergo dei Giustiniani ed ascritta al Libro d'Oro della Nobiltà di Genova. Dette due Senatori a quella Repubblica: Marco Aurelio di Bartolomeo nel 1655 e suo figlio Francesco nel 1734. Questa suprema dignità conferì alla famiglia la qualità ed il titolo marchionale. Al ramo stabilitosi in Piemonte appartennero Agostino, Consignore del feudo di Cantogno nel 1699, suo figlio Avvocato Giuseppe Maria di Villafranca, che acquistò il feudo di San Michele nel territorio di Cuneo, sul quale ebbe il titolo di Conte, e Michele, Avvocato Collegiato e Cavaliere Mauriziano, che acquistò nel 1724 il feudo di Traves con titolo di Conte.
