Ancienne et très noble famille de Sicile répartie, au cours des siècles, dans différentes régions d'Italie. Autre branche Ancienne et noble famille émilienne de Piacenza, appelée Arcelli ou Arcella, dont nous avons des nouvelles antérieures à l'an mille et dont descendent également les Paveri, Malvicini et Banduco. Beaucoup de membres de la famille se distinguèrent dans les armes et dans les hautes fonctions ecclésiastiques : de bien des privilèges elle fut favorisée par les Papes, par les Visconti, par les Sforza, par les Farnèse, par les Bourbons.
