Antica ed illustre famiglia di Piacenza, originariamente conosciuta come Arcelli, dalla Signoria di una terra omonima di cui i suoi esponenti godevano sin dal 1192. Gherardo ebbe nel 1202 la rocca di Olgiso; Martino fu creato Conte della Valle Laretta e Giacomo fu signore della città di Vercelli. Nel 1440 un ramo di tal famiglia passò nel Regno di Napoli, donde il cognome si affermò nella forma Arcella, con Cesare e Torquato A., nipoti di Filippo, tiranno di Piacenza, che, per non essere coinvolti in una guerra che i piacentini stavano organizzando contro di loro, esularono. Il primo sposò Rebecca Caracciolo e il secondo Livia Tomacelli, entrambe nobildonne; alleanze matrimoniali che permisero agli A. di essere ascritti al Patriziato Napoletano del Sedile di Capuana e al Sedile di Nido. Nel tempo si affermò anche la forma Arcellaschi o Arcellazzi. Tra i personaggi che maggiormente hanno dato lustro al casato, ricordiamo
