Se originó en la familia Archiepiscopis, y porque el noble capuchino se llamaba Capoa o de Capua. Obtuvo nobleza en Nápoles en las sedes de Capuano, Nido, Montagna y Portanova, en Capua, en Benevento, en Reggio di Calabria y en S. Pietro en Galatina. Dividido en dos ramas, el primero de los duques de Termoli en la familia Cattaneo se extinguió, el segundo de los duques de S. Cipriano en la casa de Monforte. Era la dama de ciento diecinueve baronías, dieciséis condados, ocho marquesados, nueve ducados y diez principados, tenía el título de Gran Conde de Altavilla: estaba decorada con el granizado de España y la Orden del Vellocino de Oro. Ugo capitán del emperador Isaac I Commeno; Aldemaro, Pietro, Tommaso, Guglielmo, Ludovico, otro Ludovico, Cardinali; Ludovico, Monaco Cassinese fue beatificado; Andrea y Annibale Aricvescovi de Nápoles; Pietro y Fabrizio Arciv. de Otranto; Achille grand Contestabile del reino; Iacopo chambelán al rey Robert de Anjou; Matteo, capitán de la república de Venecia, gobernador y virrey de los Abruzos para el rey Fernando I de Aragón.
