The family was also called presbyters. It had very ancient origins since the times of Otto I. A presbyter, father of Count Berno and ancestor of Bear, is remembered in Gubbio, remembered in an instrument dated 1029. Leto egubino belonged to the party of Federico Barbarossa. In the sec. XIII they emigrated from Gubbio following the struggle of the factions and moved to Perugia giving rise to the illustrious family of Baroni Penna founders of the homonymous castle in the countryside of Amelia. Francesco Della Penna was Senator of Rome in 1364; Alessio was created Cardinal by Clement III; Agamemnon was Lieutenant General of Braccio da Montone; Giacomo, captain with Niccolò Piccinino; Diomedes, General of Arms of the State of Avignon in 1573 obtained from the Church the erection of his fiefdom in the Duchy. Having married Laura dalla Corgna, Ercole Della Penna inherited the Marquisate of Castiglion del Lago
