La famiglia fu chiamata anche Presbiteri. Ebbe origini antichissime fin dai tempi di Ottone I. Si vuole ne fosse capostipite in Gubbio un Presbitero, padre del Conte Berno ed avo di Orso, ricordati in un istrumento del 1029. Leto egubino fu del partito di Federico Barbarossa. Nel sec. XIII emigrarono da Gubbio in seguito alla lotta delle fazioni e passarono a Perugia dando origine all'illustre famiglia dei Baroni Penna fondatori del castello omonimo nel contado di Amelia. Francesco Della Penna fu Senatore di Roma nel 1364; Alessio fu creato Cardinale da Clemente III; Agamennone fu Luogotenente Generale di Braccio da Montone; Giacomo, capitano con Niccolò Piccinino; Diomede, Generale delle Armi dello Stato di Avignone nel 1573 ottenne dalla Chiesa l'erezione in Ducato del suo feudo. Ercole Della Penna avendo sposato Laura dalla Corgna ebbe in eredità per i figli il Marchesato di Castiglion del Lago. Numerosi membri di questa famiglia
