La tradizione araldica vuole che questa illustre famiglia, detta Ardito o Arditi, sia la stessa che fiorì in Lombardia col nome di Conti, e che, trapiantatasi nel Napoletano con gli ostaggi lombardi presi dall'imperatore Federico II, abbia lasciato quel nome, cambiandolo. In ogni modo, i membri di tal casata li troviamo investiti, sin dal 1444 del feudo di Valentino, in Principato Citra. Geronimo Arditi, in data 8 marzo 1554, fu nominato cavaliere aurato da Carlo V e gli fu confermata l'avita arma gentilizia; dal medesimo diploma sappiamo che egli si era distinto contro i Turchi e che atti di valore avevano compiuto suo padre Troilo, nominato da re Federico cavaliere dell'Armellino, e il suo avo Giuseppe Leonardo, regio squadriere ai tempi degli aragonesi. Questa famiglia fu decorata a 20 settembre 1682 del titolo di marchese che, con privilegio del 5 luglio 1797, venne incardinato sul feudo di Castelvetere, da poco
