Antigua y noble familia italiana, con residencia en Presicce, Lecce, Casarano, Nápoles y Roma y con rama también en España, que se ha extendido, a lo largo de los siglos, por todo el mundo. En Italia la familia era más conocida como Arditi mientras que en España como Ardito o Ardite. Tras las sangrientas batallas de Pavía en 1299 y 1300, los exponentes de las familias Beccaria y Conti tuvieron que abandonar sus tierras; la familia Conti se refugió en Nápoles cambiando el apellido por Arditi o Ardito y puso el ave fénix en el escudo como señal de renacimiento. El feudo de Valentini, en el Principado Citra, pertenecía a la familia Ardito ya en la época del rey Alfonso de Aragón, de hecho resulta que en 1444 Pietro A., barón de Valentini, pagó la suma de seis onzas y "tarì" veintiséis por contribución impuesta al baronaje del Reino.
