Antica e nobile famiglia italiana, con residenza a Presicce, Lecce, Casarano, Napoli e Roma e con un ramo anche in Spagna, che nei secoli si è diffusa in tutto il mondo. In Italia la famiglia era meglio conosciuta come Arditi mentre in Spagna come Ardito o Ardite. Dopo le sanguinose battaglie di Pavia del 1299 e del 1300, gli esponenti delle famiglie Beccaria e Conti dovettero abbandonare le loro terre; la famiglia Conti si rifugiò a Napoli cambiando il cognome in Arditi o Ardito e mettendo la fenice nello stemma in segno di rinascita. Il feudo dei Valentini, nel Principato di Citra, apparteneva alla famiglia Ardito già ai tempi del re Alfonso d'Aragona, risulta infatti che nel 1444 Pietro A., barone di Valentini, pagò la somma di sei once e "tarì" ventisei per contributo imposto alla baronage del Regno.
