Antica ed assai nobile famiglia sarda, originaria di Oristano, le cui prime notizie risalgono al secolo decimo sesto, detta Aresu o Areso si è propagata, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. I membri di tal casato godevano infatti di grande reputazione ed erano in possesso di un notevole patrimonio. Nel 1575 un Giorgio era procuratore reale e collettore delle rendite di Oristano. Nel 1634 un dottor Giovanni Antonio ottenne il cavalierato ereditario e nel 1635 la nobiltà. A partire dal 1653 i suoi discendenti furono ammessi allo stamento militare e presero parte a tutti i Parlamenti. D’altronde, tal famiglia, nel dispiegarsi dei lustri, sempre è riuscita a produrre una serie di uomini che hanno reso illustre il suo nome, nei pubblici impieghi, nelle professioni liberali ed ecclesiastiche e nel servizio militare.
