Capostipite di questa famiglia fu un Childerico bavaro capitano di gran valore, al quale Alfonso re de'Longobardi donò nel 752 la terra di Regenta (oggi Argenta) col suo castello, di cui i suoi discendenti presero il nome. Trapiantatasi nel 1107 in Ferrara, quivi entrò nelle grazie degli Estensi che la onorarono di fiducia e di privilegi. Un ramo si stabilì in Modena alla cui nobiltà venne aggregato, ed appartiene ad esso un Giovanni gesuita che fiorì sullo scorcio del XVI e in principio del XVII secolo, e che fu Provinciale del suo Ordine in Milano, in Austria, in Polonia, in Boemia ed in Transilvania, e lasciò molti pregevoli scritti apologetici in latino. Un Tommaso fu Podestà di Reggio nel 1504. Oggi la famiglia è estinta. La presenza del motto nella bibliografia documentata della famiglia ci conferma l'avita nobiltà raggiunta della casata. Infatti l'origine del motto risale a circa il XIV
