Antichissima famiglia, detta Carletti, Carletto o Carletta, originaria di Arcevia, le cui prime memorie risalgono al secolo decimo terzo, circa. Capostipite conosciuto e certo è Giovan Battista, vivente nel 1480 circa. La famiglia fu dilettissima a papa Pio IV, a Cosimo III granduca di Toscana, a Francesco Maria II di Urbino; e ai papi Innocenzo XI e Clemente XI, tanto che ne insignirono dei loro ordini cavallereschi diversi membri. Alberto I V. D. uditore del card. Enrico Caetani, poi frate cappuccino, morì 1588. Papa Innocenzo XIII con Breve del 20 dicembre 1721 decorò Francesco Ottavio, che si trovava alla sua incoronazione, dei titoli di cavaliere e di conte palatino, investendolo anche del feudo di Farneto. Ebbe questi due figli: Giuseppe (1739-1814) primogenito, che però per cause politiche espatriò e andò a stabilirsi a Milano e non ritornò in patria che nella persona del figlio Giuseppe junior (1773-1844) il quale andò
