Si diffuse nei secoli per tutta l'Italia godendo ovunque prestigio e nobiltà; il Giornale di Araldica e Genealogia, fasc. gen.-febbr. 1953 a pag. 74 dice: "Le più remote notizie di questa illustre Casa ci provengono da Genova, da dove, secondo accreditate cronache è originaria. Si trasferì sin da antica epoca in Messina...". Fu loro patria pure Bologna, Milano, Perugia, Roma, ecc., ove si distinsero in particolar modo nelle scienze, a Francesco A. perugino creato nel 1517 cardinale camerlengo da papa Leone X, lo stesso pontefice concesse di insignire la propria arma del capo di devozione dei medici di Firenze (Galbreath, Manuel du Blason, 199). Rimane tuttavia da precisare se un colonnellato degli A. di Genova si sia tasferito nel 1000-1100 in Tortona o se da questa invece emigrasse in Ligura in seguito alle sventure e calamità di quei secoli, ipotesi quest'ultima confortata dalla scomparsa della famiglia sin dalla seconda metà
