Entre las más antiguas familias gomeras, se encuentra la de Arvelo. En los libros parroquiales de la Iglesia matriz de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción de la Villa de San Sebastián puede leerse el nombre de Salvador Arvelo, que fue esposo de Doña Beatriz de Brito y que está sepultado en dicha villa el año de 1606. Este matrimonio tuvo un hijo llamado Salvador de Arvelo y Brito y que ocupó el cargo de Alcalde real de Hermigua hacia 1664. Contrajo matrimonio con Doña María de la Concepción, hija del capitán Enrique de Morales, Regidor de la Isla y persona sobresaliente en ella y de su esposa Doña Bernarda de Herrera y Prieto. De dicho matrimonio nació Don Sebastián Roldán de Arvelo, quien inicia un nuevo linaje. Casó con Doña María Manuel, hija del capitán Antonio Fernández Méndez y de Doña Francisca Manuel. Sus descendientes enlazaron con los Manrique de Lara y Oramas.
