Antica e nobile famiglia spagnola, originaria della città di Azkoitia, il distretto giudiziario di Azpeitia, Guipuzcoa, di chiara e ancestrale virtù, che si è diffusa in tutto il mondo, nel corso dei secoli. I primi riferimenti alla famiglia compaiono già alla fine del XII secolo, circa la ripopolazione di Alava, essendo una delle famiglie che hanno fondato Vitoria. Alcuni membri della famiglia furono anche tra i cavalieri della spedizione di D. Pedro de Ursua alla ricerca di El Dorado nel XVI secolo. Secondo alcune ricostruzioni araldiche, la famiglia spagnola Arzaga sarebbe della stessa linea dell'Arzaga o Arzago d'Italia e, più precisamente, della Lombardia. Originaria di Como, la casa italiana vanta tra i suoi membri numerosi capitani, come Federico, che era tenente generale a Milano e Genova. La famiglia lombarda si divise in due rami. Quello proveniente da Paolo è stato riconosciuto nobile nel 1771 e l'altro da Antonio nel 1770.
