Este sobrenome é muito difundido na península com numerosas casas ancestrais. Com base em referências de historiadores da época e outras encontradas por Araldis nos arquivos cadastrais de cidades e outros particulares, podemos afirmar, mas não assegurar, que este escudo ou outro muito semelhante a ele, surgiu inicialmente entre os séculos 11 e 14. século, particularmente no repovoamento de Estella, final do século XII, sendo uma das famílias a residir dentro das muralhas da cidade. As referências desta família parecem especificar-se com maior frequência do século XV ao século XIX, sobretudo os acontecimentos da expedição do cavaleiro navarro D. Pedro de Ursua, que partiu de Lima em fevereiro de 1559, fazendo parte principal do comando de as tropas que empreenderam a conquista de "el Dorado" (hoje Minas Geraes). Tudo isto parece coincidir com a memória familiar de alguns membros do ramo da família Couto.
