Si riferisce dal Mugnos essere questa una chiarissima famiglia spagnuola, proveniente di Francia. Un Giovanni Ascenso gentiluomo catalano nel 1283 fu il primo a recarsi in Sicilia col carico di cameriere dell'infante Federico, indi nel 1501 ottenne la castellania di Naro e molti territorii. Un Matteo fu uno degli eletti baroni del re Federico II opponendosi a re Giacomo, che volea rinunziare la Sicilia a Carlo d'Angiò; fu per questo eletto nel 1340 suo regio familiare. Un secondo Matteo fu cavaliere, giudice giurato di Girgenti con onze 24 annue su' proventi del porto di detta città. Venuto re Martino in Trapani il 1598 fu ivi accolto da un Guglielmo Ascenso ed altri baroni; per lo che fu eletto suo familiare, ed ebbe concessi i beni allodiali che appartenevano ad Enrico Ventimiglia Conte di Alcamo. un Matteo in Girgenti fu cavaliere, e poi Giudice nel 1401; indi ebbe il feudo di
