Secondo lo Scorza, la famiglia sarebbe orignaria di Chiavari ove risiedeva sin dal 1100 circa ; i suoi membri occuparono a Genova onorevoli uffici (Famiglie nobili genovesi); il Guasco di Bisio annovera gli A. tra le famiglie che nel XII sec. sotto i marchesi del Vasto costituirono il Comune Signorile di Albenga soggetto poi alla Rep.di Genova, e così il Crollalanza il quale tuttavia erra attribuendo a questi la signoria di Giaglione perché trattasi di altra famiglia A. che partecipò sotto il dominio dei Conti di Savoia nella prima metà
