Illustre casata originaria, come l'omonima di Bernezzo, con la quale ha molto probabilmente unità e identità di sangue, da Asti, repubblica feracissima di grandi schiatte e di gran nome. Le prime notizie datano da Cesare, investito di Costigliole nel 1581; e la famiglia grandeggia con Filippo Valentino, Primo marchese di S. Marzano (13 dic. 1771) e cavaliere dell'Ordine Supremo (25 marzo 1771). Il nipote suo, Filippo (n. Torino, 12 nov. 1767; m. Torino, 19 luglio 1828), il più illustre personaggio di sua casa, ha pure il gran Collare il 16 agosto 1820. "Diplomatico di gran valore - scrive di lui il Manno - stimato ed adoperato da Napoleone I; plenipotenziario del Re di Sardegna ai Congressi di Vienna e di Lubiana"; ricorre nominato con onore alla restaurazione e nei moti del 1821, nei quali il primogenito suo Carlo fu compromessi gravemente. Dal marchese Filippo diramarono le due linee di Ermolao
