Il cognome, largamente diffuso nella Liguria, si illustrò particolarmente in una linea che, spuntata da umilissima origine, presto assurse a celebrità universale nelle gesta di Biagio Assereto, le quali apportarono fama, ricchezze e feudi alla famiglia. I primi pare che siano venuti in Genova dalla Valle di Recco intorno all'anno 1300. Esercitando vari mestieri, pervennero sul finire del sec. XIV a Costantino, il cui figlio Biagio divenne notaio, e cancelliere della repubblica, infine ammiraglio, cui toccò la gloria della battaglia di Ponza e della cattura di re Alfonso il magnanimo, del re di Navarra e dei più grandi signori e capitani di Napoli e di Sicilia (1435), vittoria alla quale alludono il grifo genovese e le tre corone dello stemma poi assunto dagli Assereto; epperò fu fatto dal duca di Milano signore di Serravalle Scrivia.
