Parece provir a família dos Avelares da dos Fonsecas, porque se supõe que Diogo Mendes era filho de Mem Gonçalves da Fonseca, rico-homem de Portugal, o qual Diogo Mendes viveu no tempo dos Reis D. Afonso II e D. Sancho II, na freguesia de S. Romão de Mouriz, no concelho de Aguiar de Sousa, onde possuía, por dote de sua mulher, D. Elvira Dias, alguns casais. Esta senhora era filha de D. Fernão Gonçalves, cavaleiro da Terra de Sousa, e de sua mulher, D. Examea Dias de Urró, de quem largamente fala o Conde D. Pedro no seu Livro dal Lunhagens, contado como lhe mordera uma vespa e da bênção que deixara aos seus descendentes. De Diogo Mendes e de sua mulher nasceu Estêvão Dias de Mouriz, assim denominado porque viveu no lugar de Mouriz de Sousa, cujo senhorio possuía. Era padroerio A., do mosteiro de Cete e casou-se com D. Maria Martins do A., filha de Martim de Aragão, fidalgo que veio para Portugal com a Rainha D. Dulce de Aragão, mulher de D. Sancho I e ainda seu parente, e de D. Maria Reimendo, sua mulher, D. Maria Martins teve em dote a Quinta do A., na freguesia de S. Lourenço de Pias, concelho de Lousada. Estêvão Dias de Mouriz recebeu-se segunda vez com D. Estefânia de Maceira, natural da Terra da Feira. De ambos os matrimónios deixou geração, que tomou o apelido de A.. Timbre: três espadas invertidas e apontadas de prata, empunhadas de vermelho e guarnecidas de ouro.
