Antica ed illustre famiglia, originaria dalla Toscana. Secondo alcuni scrittori si trova nel regno di Napoli fin dall'epoca angioina, con la qualifica di milite, Simone, nel 1299; e, con la stessa qualifica, Tommaso di Salerno, maestro portulano e provisore della Puglia, al tempo della regina Giovanna I. E da Salerno, ove ebbero prima dimora, passarono i V. in Terra d'Otranto, in occasione, probabilmente, del matrimonio di Giacomo con Antonia Sambiase di Terra d'Otranto; pel quale matrimonio, Giacomo venne in possesso dei casali di Morigino, Palmerigi e Castro (che costituivano, insieme ad altri casali, la baronia di Ceresole). Per acquisto fattone dai Filomarino, nel secolo XVI, ebbero i V. in feudo la terra di Minervino, sulla quale Giuseppe Maria, con diploma 11 settembre 1683, ottenne da re Carlo II, il titolo di duca, titolo riconosciuto, poi, con R. Rescritto 26 aprile 1856 ad Andrea V. Godette questa famiglia nobiltà in Bari,
