Famille connue depuis Armandus, témoin de la charte de donation des églises de Mazerat-Aurouze et de la Brequeuille à l'abbaye de la Chaise-Dieu, par le seigneur d'Aubusson et d'Aurouze en avril 1078 et janvier 1091. On rencontre sous ce nom: Artaud et Pierre (1214). Itier, damoiseau, fils de Pierre, chevalier, et de Blanche de Sarrasin, fait en 1302, une donation à l'hôpital de Langeac. Deux branches qui dérogèrent à la noblesse: première branche, bourgeois du Puy, seigneurs de la Valette près Borne et de Marcillac, parfois qualifiés nobles, auxquels se rattachent: Armandet, fils d'Armand (1328); Jean (1341), bourgeois du Puy (1399); Pierre, lieutenant-général du bailli du Velay (1393); Armand, bourgeois du Puy (1434) et plusieurs consuls de cette ville; deuxième branche, bourgeois de Paulhaguet, seigneurs de la Ribeyre.
