Una delle tante famiglie che discesero dai Viceconti di Genova, così detta dall'avvocatura del monastero di S. Stefano esercitata da taluni de' suoi membri nei secoli XI e XII. Gli Avvocati erano partecipi del pedaggio di Gavi. Giovanni Avvocato fu Console del Comune di Genova nel 1210 e nel 1215. Gli annali rammentano le furiose discordie tra gli Avvocati ed i Castello, composte nel 1169 dall'Arciv. Ugone della Volta. Altra famiglia originaria di Lucca. Signori di Col di Pozzo, che comprendevano nella loro signoria S. Gemignano, S. Pancrazio, Marsia ecc. Poche sono le città, che vantino famiglie nobili si antiche come quelle in Genova, poichè malgrado le vicende dei tempi essa conta ancora nel suo seno molte famiglie che provano la loro genealogia da padre in figlio mercè gli atti notarili dalla metà del XII secolo fino a' giorni nostri, vale a dire da un'epoca che serva di barriera a

Blasone della famiglia Avvogadi o Avvocati da Firenze. L'auotre (Ceramelli Papiani, ndr), considerando l'unicità della fonte da cui risulta questa famiglia (Manoscritto 472), dopo avere effettuato delle ipotesi sulla veridicità di questo stemma, giunge alla conclusione che il cognome si riferisce alla famiglia Ughi, detta anche Avvocati, e che lo stemma disegnatovi sia stato abbozzato posteriormente per inserirvi l'arme della famiglia Bartolini Salimbeni.
