Tra le più antiche e nobili famiglie aragonesi, sempre distintasi grazie all'elevatezza dei suoi esponenti. In Italia tal casato è fiorito grazie a Giuseppe-Nicola de Azara y Perera (Barbuñales, 5 dicembre 1730 – Parigi, 26 gennaio 1804), in patria don José Nicolas de Azara y Perera, uno dei diplomatici spagnoli di maggior rilievo nella seconda metà del Settecento. Egli rappresentò infatti la Spagna a Roma per ben 32 anni, dal 1765 al 1798, ed ivi ebbe grande influenza sotto Clemente XIV e Pio VI. Fu anche ambasciatore a Parigi dal 1798 al 1803 ed ivi si impegnò grandemente nel tentativo di salvare la sua patria ma anche il ducato di Parma dalle mire imperialiste di Napoleone Bonaparte. Il Papa lo ascrisse al patriziato romano, oltre ad esser già stato consigliere di Stato del re cattolico nonché collare dell'Ordine di Carlo III, mentre il duca Ferdinando I di Parma gli concesse
