Capo stipite degli Ezzelini in Italia fu Ezzolo di Arpone sceso della Germania nel 1036 con Corrado II il Salico, da cui ebbe in dono il castello di Onara e quello di S. Romano dal quale poi si dissero, gli Ezzelini da Romano. Fu inoltre investito quest'Ezzelo del castello e distretto di Bassano e delle due ville di Angarano e Cartiglione, dove esercitò un principesco dominio. Ezzellino suo figlio, detto il Balbo perchè balbuziente, fu crociato in Terra Santa nel 1147, e tornato in patria fu investito dal Vescovo di Feltre del castello di Maser, e da quello di Belluno delle terre di Oderzo e Mussolente. Ezzellino detto il Monaco, perchè pria di morire vestì l'abito dei Benedettini di Campese, capitanò la fazione dei Ghibellini Marchegiani. Si rese potente in Verona, e commise stragi ed incendi nella città di Vicenza: ebbe seggio anche a Padova, si pose in lotta coi
