Alte und sehr adelige Schweizer Familie, ursprünglich aus dem Kanton Bern, von klarer und angestammter Tugend, die sich im Laufe der Jahrhunderte weltweit verbreitet hat. Die in viele Zweige geteilte Familie lebte auch in den Kantonen Luzern, Zürich, Obwalden, Zug und Wallis fürstlich. Eindeutiger Beweis seines Adels sind die zahlreichen Wappen in den Schweizerischen Staatsarchiven. Die erste uns bekannte Person ist ein Hans Bühlmann, der bereits 1474 in einem Gerichtsurteil von Giswil erwähnt wird. Im folgenden Jahrhundert sticht die Gestalt von Johannes Bühlmann hervor, der von 1528/1531 bis 1555 Pfarrer von Cham war. Ein Quirinus Bühlmann, Theologe, blühte im selben Jahrhundert auf. Die frühesten Hinweise auf diese Familie sind leider sehr lückenhaft. Ab dem 18. Jahrhundert gibt es die grössten Neuigkeiten jedoch immer in Bezug auf die Kantone Bern und Luzern.
