Antigua y muy noble familia suiza, originaria del Cantón de Berna, de clara y ancestral virtud, que se ha extendido por todo el mundo, a lo largo de los siglos. Dividida en muchas ramas, la familia también vivió noblemente en los cantones de Lucerna, Zúrich, Obwald, Zug y Valais. Clara evidencia de su nobleza es la presencia de sus numerosos escudos de armas en los archivos estatales suizos. La primera persona que conocemos es un tal Hans Bühlmann, citado en una sentencia del tribunal de Giswil, ya en 1474. En el siglo siguiente destaca la figura de Johannes Bühlmann, que fue párroco de Cham desde 1528/1531 hasta 1555. Un Quirinus Bühlmann, teólogo, floreció en el mismo siglo.
