Antica ed assai nobile famiglia piemontese, conosciuta come Bajardo, Bajardi o Baiardi, di chiara ed avita virtù, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. La tradizione vuole che essa discenda da Pierre Terrail de Bayard (Pontcharra, 1476 – Rovasenda, 30 aprile 1524), detto “il Baiardo”, noto per essersi distinto durante le guerre rinascimentali italiane. Tuttavia tracce del casato le rinveniamo già nel secolo decimo secondo, nel Nord Italia. In Lomellina Lanfranco Bajardo di Candiano appare nel 1181 tra i contribuenti del fodro e del giogatico dell'agro pavese (Doc. di Pavia relat. a Voghera, 65), Pietro B. e fratelli sono tenutari di beni posseduti dal monastero di S. Maiolo in territorio di S. Lorenzo (Pavia) come rilevasi dalle deposizioni sui beni stessi di testi tra cui Gregorio Baiardo che sottoscrive il documento rogato appunto in S. Lorenzo il 4 novembre 1214 (Carte del monastero di S. Maiolo, 68
