L'opinione di alcuni che la casata di Parma abbiano origine dalla famiglia francese dei signori di Bayard nel Delfinato, a cui appartenne il famoso cavalier "senza paura", il Baiardo, non ha alcuna autorità di argomenti a suo favore. Ben è vero al contrario che le prime notizie rintracciano i Baiardi a Castellano di Parma e risalgono al sec. XIII; di dove alcuni scesero ben presto al capoluogo. Nel codex legum municipalium all'an. 1267 (17 settembre) si leggono i patti stabiliti tra il comune di Parma e i ghibellini Gherardo, Bernardino, Alberto, fratelli Baiardi assieme ai De Cadonica dopo la capitolazione del castello di Ravarano, in cui i detti ghibellini erano assediati. Nel 1309 si trova ricordato un Ugo, il quale col figlio Pietro è stato scelto dal canonico Ottobono Rossi a suo esecutore testamentario. Questo Pietro fu uomo reputato assai in patria e fuori e sin dal 1296
