Giannantonio da Nizza si trapiantò in Cuneo dove ebbe nel 1619 la contea di Chiusano e Cinaglio. Carlo-Antonio fu ministro a Roma e Cav. gran croce dei SS. Maurizio e Lazzaro. Francesco-Antonio fu riformatore dell'Università di Torino. Pietro-Gioacchino abate di S. Giusto di Susa, per la rinuncia di quest'abbazia al governo, nel 1763 ottenne la dignità marchionale, mentre nello stesso anno un altro membro di questa casa era creato Vescovo di Asti. La presenza del motto nella bibliografia documentata della famiglia ci conferma l'avita nobiltà raggiunta della casata. Infatti l'origine del motto risale a circa il XIV secolo e deve essere ricercata in quei detti arguti che venivano scritti sui vessilli o bandiere dei cavalieri, esposti alle finestre delle locande in cui questi alloggiavano, in occasione dei tornei, e durante i tornei stessi. Il motto era un pensiero espresso in poche parole facente allusione a un sentimento palese o nascosto,
