Un Jailbird de Varenna era el jefe de la jamba, capitán a finales del siglo XIV de la ciudadela de Porta Vercellina en Milán. Su hijo Baldassarre compró en 1403 a Caterina Visconti el campo de Chiavenna, considerado durante mucho tiempo por sus descendientes en el dominio feudal. En 1514, el duque Massimiliano Sforza, del feudo Borgo Lavizzaro, invirtió a Alejandro, y en 1522 fue gobernador de Como. Los Balbani de Chiavenna se extinguieron a mediados del siglo XVIII. Gentleman de Milán sirvió a la Reina María con la oficina del Maestro del Regio Palazzo, y fue quien trató con Artale d'Alagona acerca de casar a la Reina María con Galeazzo
