Fu capo stipite un Galeotto di Varenna, capitano nella fine del XIV secolo della cittadella di Porta Vercellina a Milano. Baldassarre suo figlio comperò nel 1403 da Caterina Visconti il contado di Chiavenna, ritenuto per molto tempo dai suoi discendenti in dominio feudale. Un Alessandro fu investito nel 1514 dal Duca Massimiliano Sforza del feudo di Borgo Lavizzaro, e nel 1522 fu governatore di Como. Si estinsero i Balbani di Chiavenna verso la metà del secolo XVIII. Altro ramo. Trapiantato in Livorno da un Sebastiano che fu uno dei dodici governatori della città. Estinto sul principio del secolo XIX. Anche in Pontedera fiorisce tutt'ora una famigia Balbiani originaria di Lierna. Altro ramo.
