Famiglia patrizia dogale genovese. Questo casato, già noto ai tempi di Roma, fin dal secolo XII era diffuso in varie parti d'Italia. Quelli che fiorivano in quel secolo in Genova e nella Riviera di Ponente, specialmente a Ventimiglia, già avevano tradizione di essere venuti da Venezia, città in cui si ritrovano parecchi cognomi di Roma imperiale. Ma tali famiglie liguri si estinguevano sullo scorcio del XV secolo o all'inizio del XVI, quando giungeva in Genova la famiglia lombarda Cepollina (ben diversa dai Cepollini conti di Alto e Caprauna fin dal secolo XIV), che vi prosperava ed affermava assumendo il nome di Balbi, col quale poi soppiantavano affatto il vecchio nome Cepollina quando per le leggi del 1576 le famiglie dell'albergo Pinelli e degli altri ventisette alberghi del patriziato genovese ebbero facoltà di abbandonare il cognome dell'albergo e riassumere il pristino cognome loro. Algerino Cepollina venne in Genova
