Originari del castello omonimo in liguria, detta Balestrino o Balestrini, già capo feudo di un ramo dei Del Carretto. Antonio fu Consigliere della repubblica nel 1455 e 1461. Ascritta in famiglia Promontorio. Arme del casato: D'oro, al leone di nero impugnante con le branche anteriori una balestra al naturale, in palo. Motto della famiglia: In deo spes mea. Altro ramo. Antica e nobile famiglia originaria della Sicilia. Un Giuseppe B., con privilegio del 21 luglio 1785, fu insignito del titolo di barone di S. Giuseppe, titolo che vediamo a 25 novembre 1811, riconosciuto nella persona di Salvatore Balestrini e La Valle, figlio del precedente. Una Maria Anna B. possedette tre quarti del feudo di Fossone con titolo di Signore, di cui ne ottenne investitura a 15 dicembre 1808.
