This family is the firstborn branch of the lineage of the Ballati, which derives from Giovanni di Orazio di Francesco, who, in the first decades of the seventeenth century, married Leonora de 'Nerli, lady of honor of Caterina de' Medici, duchess widow of Mantua and governor of Siena. When Prince Mattias succeeded Catherine in the governorate of the city, Giovanni Ballati was appointed chamber gentleman of the Medici prince, always living in his court. Horace his son was called to France by his maternal uncle Francesco Nerli, the ambassador of Mantua to that court. After some time Nerli returned to Mantua and, having no descendants, he adopted his nephew, giving him the marquise Ippolita Rossi di S. Secondo as wife. So Horace added the surname and the coat of arms of the Nerli; having received the marquisate of Valderro, he exchanged it with that of Villa S. Secondo in Monferrato
