Esta familia es la rama primogénita del linaje de los Ballati, que deriva de Giovanni di Orazio di Francesco, quien, en las primeras décadas del siglo XVII, se casó con Leonora de 'Nerli, dama de honor de Caterina de' Medici, duquesa viuda de Mantua y gobernador de Siena. Cuando el príncipe Mattias sucedió a Catalina en la gobernación de la ciudad, Giovanni Ballati fue nombrado caballero de cámara del príncipe Medici, siempre viviendo en su corte.
