Antica ed assai nobile famiglia di Modena, di chiara ed avita virtù, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia, con un maggiore insediamento in Toscana. La famiglia risulta presente nel modenese sin dal secolo decimo sesto ma il primo personaggio di cui si ha memoria storica certa è un Domenico, protonotario apostolico, vivente in Roma nel 1630, che per nove anni fu professore di filosofia morale all'Università La Sapienza e che ha lasciato alcuni scritti latini, citati dal conte Mazzucchelli e dal Tiraboschi. Successivamente troviamo la famiglia insediata anche nel ferrarese. Agostino, dottore in l'una e l'altra legge, fu commissario del Foro ecclesiastico di Cento e fiorì nel 1652. Coevi Pietro e Giacomo, entrambi dottori in "utroque jure". Un ramo della medesima prosapia è fiorito in Toscana, precisamente nelle città di Pisa e Firenze. Note: nella biblioteca estense universitaria di Modena uno stemma quasi identico è catalogato al cognome Banderi, è ipotizzabile una variante cognominale.
