Originaria di Cavaglio e signora di Vignolo e di Cerrasca, si trapiantò in Savigliano poco prima del 1476, e quivi un Antonio ed i suoi figli Stefano e Giovanni acquistarono in enfiteusi dal Comune amplissimi latifondi, che dal loro nome furono poi detti il Barattà. Lo stesso Antonio nel 1481 ottenne la cittadinanza saviglianese. Carlo celebre giureconsulto, fatto senatore dal Duca Carlo III, ed autore di una Corografia di Savigliano. Lorenzo Cristoforo eletto nel 1727 Vescovo di Fossano, fu l'ultimo di sua famiglia, la quale aveva ottenuto fin dal 1588 il feudo di S. Agnese nella vicaria di Sospello con titolo baronale. Motto della famiglia: Initium sapientie est timor domini. Altro ramo.
